Tackling Educational Disadvantage with Schools Plus
Did you know, only 24% of children who have free school meals acquire the benchmark 5 GCSE grades from A*- C? This is less than half of the national rate. You can change this.
Schools Plus is a national programme aimed at tackling educational inequality through tutoring for school pupils. Last year we had over 150 tutors across Hampshire. We are currently recruiting for the new academic year to give even more young people the support and encouragement they need to reach their academic potential.
From literacy to numeracy, geography to music, psychology to homework support, there's something for everyone! If there's not currently a project available in a subject area you'd like to support you can get in touch with Daniel at and we'll support you to set it up!
Placements are across Hampshire so if you are commuting to Winchester, then you might find an opportunity nearer to home too!
How long do I have to commit for?
We ask for at least an hour a week plus travel time to your school although this will vary from project to project. If a project is led by you, the tutor, then it may involve some pre-planning to prepare for; of course we are on hand to help out where possible.
Volunteering with Schools Plus is flexible around you!
Winchester Hub is committed to making our activities inclusive to all students. We can make reasonable adjustments to application processes, selection workshops, training sessions, volunteering projects and other activities on a case-by-case basis.
We also provide ongoing support for the students we work with, so if you have particular accessibility needs, including special educational needs, please do get in touch with and let us know how we can make the activity more accessible.
This project takes place at primary and secondary schools across Winchester, Basingstoke, and Eastleigh. However, if reasonable adjustments require you take an alternative form of transport, just get in touch and we can cover your costs. We reimburse all Winchester Hub volunteers' travel expenses.
You may also be eligible for funding from the Winchester Employability Fund.
Why not volunteer with a friend?
Volunteering for Winchester Hub is social and you'll have the chance to meet many like-minded people, but why not ask a friend to sign up with you too?
