Schools Plus helps young people to achieve their academic potential by placing university students into local schools and colleges to tutor in lessons and lead extra-curricular clubs.
Winchester, Eastleigh and Basingstoke Schools
1-2 hours a week, during term time throughout the academic year
Schools Plus is a national Student Hubs programme and has been running in Winchester since 2014.
It aims to tackle educational disadvantage by sending students in to local schools to tutor in teacher-led lessons, or tutor in student-led after school clubs for children in curriculum or non-curriculum areas.
We offer a variety of different placements in our local partner schools. Placements are offered at a range of primary and secondary schools in Winchester, Eastleigh and Basingstoke.
Our volunteers support with anything and everything - from in class Maths and English support to running after school club activities! All projects take place Monday - Friday, when applying volunteers may select their preferences based on location and avaliability.
The schools we are working with in each area in 2019/20 are:
Winchester Schools: Harestock Primary, Stanmore Primary
Eastleigh Schools: Fair Oak Juniors, Eastleigh Library
Basingstoke Schools: Basingstoke Library
We expect at least one term of volunteering, which typically involves 1-2 hours a week of volunteering during 6 weeks of a term, with an induction before your placements starts. Most volunteers continue into semester two, atlhough you may choose to swap placement to a different school or location in the second semester.
Communication, teamwork, leadership, adaptability, time management, safeguarding, school liaison, behaviour management, tutoring, academic support, pastoral support and working with external staff are all skills you will gain by taking part in Schools Plus. This volunteering opportunity is excellent for anyone who wants to experience working in schools and with young people, or is exploring a career in education/youth work.
All of our programmes are supported by students and staff. As part of Schools Plus, each schools has a volunteer lead who communicates with the school. On top of this there are two dedicated committee members and one staff member available for support and guidance.
Volunteering for Winchester Hub is social and you'll have the chance to meet many like-minded people, but why not ask a friend to sign up with you too?
Schools Plus is committed to being an inclusive programme, and encourages all students to get involved. We can make reasonable adjustments to application processes, selection workshops, training sessions, your volunteering placement, and other activities on a case-by-case basis. We also provide ongoing support for the students we work with, so if you have particular accessibility needs, including if you want to disclose a disability or special educational needs, please do get in touch with Helen at firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know how we can make the activity more accessible.
We reimburse all Winchester Hub volunteers' travel expenses, such as car or bus travel, throughout the project.
If you have any questions please get in touch with Helen at email@example.com or pop into our office (WB116).
